During the 18th century, a man named Chalmers, who lived at Morganstoune, resented the raids by the Caterans. He was prepared to protect his property fiercely, which the Caterans would not have. They plotted to murder Chalmers in his sleep. While out tending his cattle, he actually spotted some Caterans lying in wait. He feigned not having seen them and went about the rest of his business. That night, he stayed up to beat the Caterans at their own game. Eventually, a Cateran stealthily tried to enter the house and was killed by Chalmers, who also killed a second one. The remaining Caterans crept away and never troubled Chalmers again.
