This dress button was found in the garden of Dirnanean and is from the Small family of Dirnanean – the motto is “Ratione non Ira” Reason not Anger (seems very apt!) and the motif is a palm symbol of peace.

The button looks as though it is from the time of James Small who died in 1900 and he owned, as well as Dirnanean, all the way down Strathardle to Merklands including Pitcarmick and a large area in Glenisla, Kirkhillocks which he inherited from his brother and an area in upper Glenisla called Glencally.

A significant length of the Cateran Trail runs over land which was owned by James Small.
