After a great battle King Arthur’ wife Guinevere, also known as Vanora, was captured by the rebel Knight Mordred, who threw her into his stronghold on Barry Hill,.near Alyth. She is reported to have fallen in love with Mordred, and King Arthur immediately set about capturing the stronghold. Eventually the fort was stormed and King Arthur ordered that Guinevere be put to death by being torn to pieces by wild boars. This cruel sentence was carried out and she was buried at Meigle.. A different tradition claims that Mordred himself killed Guinevere and left her grave to be marked at Meigle by a large mound, or tumulus. It is also said “that if a young woman shall walk over the grave of Vanora she shall entail upon herself perpetual sterility’.
