This is the main rock type found on the upland portion of the Cateran Trail and probably the oldest thing you will see en route. It was laid down about 750 million years ago as sediment from an eroding mountain chain on the margins of a long lost continent. Millions of years later, due to earth movements which peaked about 470 million years ago, this sediment was compressed, crumpled up and metamorphosed to form a massive new mountain chain. In its turn this mountains range has been mostly eroded away and the schist rocks once hidden deep within it are now exposed. The name Dalradian which derives from the Celtic region of Dalriada is used as a convenient name for this rock group.
